That Superstar Rajinikanth's Endhiran/Robot proved to a showstopper in the Indian entertainment scene last year is a well-known fact. 

But what's new is that the film is now making waves internationally, especially among movie geeks.

The movie's trailer and a clip from the film (in Russian, no less!), which were posted on a few movie geek websites, have managed to grab eyeballs of film buffs, who are clearly flabbergasted by the film's way over-the-top action sequences.

Comments range from gushing praises to downright derision. "Is Endhiran cheesy? Yes.
Are the effects improbable, and bloody awful? Yes. And does it effortlessly kick ass over anything Hollywood has to offer? Absolutely. This is moviemaking, Hollywood. Take note, and step aside," posts an anonymous commentator, clearly awed by the film. However, another commentator, unimpressed by the film, writes, "There are not enough synonyms for dreadful to adequately describe this paean to absolute dreadfulness."

Incidentally, a few even find the film much better than the popular Transformers movies. "Demented and over the top, yes, but still far FAR FAR better than any of the Transformers movies," mentions another blogger. Take a bow, director Shankar!

He can get millions raving about tricks like getting a cigarette somersault and land in his mouth or a pair of shades land on his eyes from mid-air, romance a woman onscreen half his age and rake in over Rs 100 crore in the first week of his film's release. That's the phenomenon called Rajinikanth .


'Robot', the Rajinikanth-starrer which became the second highest grosser among Indian films and spawned a slew of Rajini jokes, is set to come to the laboratory of IIM-Ahmedabad.

As part of an elective course called 'Contemporary film industry: A business perspective', students of the postgraduate programme at IIM-A will take up 'Robot' or 'Enthiran' as a case study to analyse the business of cinema and its success story. The course will also study 'Muthu', another Tamil film starring Rajinikanth. The movie was later translated into Japanese as 'Muthu Odoru Maharaja' or 'Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja'.
 
This 60-year-old actor, who is still the undisputed Superstar of Kollywood, recently has one more feather to add to his cap! Yes, Endhiran/Robot has been selected as the case study by the Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad for the students to analyze the business of cinema and its success.

Here’s the latest feather in Rajinikant’s cap. After giving Monalisa that smile, knowing Victoria’s secret and getting Google to Rajinikant, he has made it possible for Prabhat Talkies to screen a Hindi film — Robot the Hindi version of the South Indian superstar’s Enthiran. 

What’s so great about this, you ask! Well, Prabhat considered the Mecca of Marathi cinema hasn’t screened a Hindi film here since 2001.

While superstar Rajinikanth-starrer Enthiran and Robot (Hindi) are making waves all over the country, Pune isn’t too far behind. Much like the rampage of the Rajini clones in the film, continuing its record march through the country, Robot has managed to register this significant achievement. 

It is being shown in Prabhat Talkies predominantly known for showcasing Marathi movies. Prabhat Talkies, Pune’s oldest cinema theatre has entered it’s 76th year. During the last decade and half, it has become the bastion of Marathi movies. 

The last time a Hindi movie was showcased here was in 2001, when Veer Savarkar, produced by Sudhir Phadke, was screened here.

So, when posters of Robot were put up at Prabhat Talkies last week on Friday, people had a hard time believing it. Padmakar Wagh, the manager of Prabhat Talkies, said, “It was unbelievable for movie connoisseurs to see a Hindi movie poster put up here. 

When people rang up to enquire about the show timings and they heard that we were screening Robot at 6.30 pm and 9.30 pm, they exclaimed, “Is this really Prabhat?”

When asked how and why Robot made it’s way to the theatre, the manager laid to rest all doubts this reporter had of a hostage-like situation masterminded by Chitti-turned-evil. 

Wagh said, “There was a huge demand from moviegoers that the movie be screened here. Many people had asked us about it as Robot was making it to the headlines. There was a lot of curiosity about the film. 

People who did not want to shell out much money in multiplexes, wanted to watch Robot here. The booking of the movie has lived up to its demand.” 

Wagh refused to give this reporter specific numbers, saying that he could not disclose the figures. 

According to Wagh, before Veer Savarkar in 2001, real commercial Hindi movies that played here were Fareb and Machis in 1996. It seems that Rajini has started a new trend at Prabhat, Dabangg is also being screened at the theatre now. 

Wagh said, “Robot was brought here on public demand. After playing in many multiplexes and theatres in city, we brought it here on an experimental basis. It was played along with Dabangg one a show each day. 

In terms of collections, it is somewhat ahead of Dabangg. You can safely say that is first Hindi movie in a decade here.” And just in case you were wondering, “Nahin, Prabhat badnaam nahin hua”.

Rajni Rocks In Robot Eanthiran-Aamir Khan

Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan says he is yearning to watch southern superstar Rajnikanth-starrer Robot.

"I am most keen to see Robot. Rajni sir rocks!" Aamir posted on social networking site Facebook.

The movie, which is called Endhiran in Tamil, also features Aishwarya Rai. Apparently made at a budget of Rs.175 crore ($38 million), it is being lapped up by audiences across India.Actors

who have seen the movie are all praise for it, but have pointed to its inordinate length.

Riteish Deshmukh posted on Twitter: "Superstar Rajni! He is a phenomenon. Action in Robot is just what you want to watch as a Rajni fan. Go watch it now - a bit long but worth it."

Actor Tusshar kapooropined: "...quite a fun film but a bit long. Rajni looks young and energetic even at this age. No wonder he’s such a superstar."

Actress Sameera Reddy went gaga over the 60-year-old actor. "As the No.1 Rajnikanth fan, I am so proud that he has kicked ass at the box office! So proud of you Rajni sir! You are the best!" she tweeted. (IANS)

Incredible special effects, graphics and super fun, that’s Enthiran. It is your family vacation film, due to the magic screen presence of “the one man army”- Rajinikanth.

You get to see a new superhero who is not Spiderman, Batman or Ironman. He is Chitty, the Robot, who acquires artificial intelligence and keeps the audiences glued to their seats. However don’t go expecting the typical Rajinikanth mass masala, as this film is something different but nevertheless entertaining. It is the classiest Rajinikanth movie which is technically state-of-art, with a designer look.

Story, like in all Shankar films is wafer thin. Vaseegaran (Rajinikanth) is a computer scientist and a nerd. He creates a Robot and names him Chitty (Rajinikanth), and his dream is to make it available for the Indian army. Sana (Aishwarya Rai) is a medical student who is in love with Vasee who is too immersed in his work. Vasee’s mentor and Professor Bohra (Danny Denzongappa), feels jealous of his invention and wants to use Chitty for evil things.

Meanwhile Vaseegaran inducts artificial intelligence into Chitty, to make him more human, but it spells disaster. Chitty falls in love with Sana and starts rebelling against Vasee and treats him like his competitor and enemy. At the same time Chitty, comes under the influence of Bohra, who tries to use him for his nefarious activities. But things go awry as Chitty turns into a Frankenstein, kidnaps Sana, kills Bohra and declares war on Vaseegaran.

The entire film is held together by Rajinikanth, who simply rocks as the scientist and the Robot. He is brilliant and the one-man entertainment troupe who makes his super heroics credible. The chemistry between the scientist and the robot crackles with energy, especially in the first half. Rajini steals the show as Chitty the Robo, goofy in the beginning and exuding menace with his expressive body and eye language in the second half.

The stunning Aishwarya Rai is good and has equal footing and brings an uninhibited joie to her role as Sana. Danny Denzongappa has hardly anything to do while the comedy of Santhanam and Karnas falls flat as it more slapstick in nature. Technically the film is awesome, and the money spent by Sun Pictures on special effects and graphics shows on the screen and stands up to Hollywood cinema standards.

Among the most breathtaking scenes, it is the formation scenes in the climax of thousands of Robots like Snake, dragon, ball, and Eiffel tower, Robot giant among many are spectacular. The stunt scene on the suburban train is awesome. Sabu Cyril’s production design are top-notch, especially the scientist labs and factory scenes.

Cinematography by Ratnavel gives it sheen along with Bhanu’s make-up for Rajinikanth which is perfect. He has never looked so good on screen. Antony’s editing is razor sharp, though he could have made it a bit racier. The songs and its picturisation are nowhere near Shankar’s earlier films. However Kilimanjaro... and Arima, Arima... stands out for its stunning visuals and AR Rahman’s score.

On the downside, there are far too many computer jargons and terms like gigabyte, IP address, worming and de-worming, which the ordinary viewer will not understand. The ‘mosquito scene’ and Kalabhavan Mani’s ‘One-day boyfriend’ scene hampers the tempo. The film doesn't just deliver solid entertainment for hardcore Rajini fans as the usual ingredients associated with his films like punch lines, electrifying stunts, sentiments and mass comedy is missing.

Shankar’s Enthiran- The Robot, will make you completely surrender to power of visual extravaganza and the technical finesse. His sci-fi dream project is groundbreaking, bigger but not better. Go for it for Rajinikanth, he is in rocking form. Taste the thunder.

Verdict: Enjoy the Ride

ENDHIRAN - PRODUCTION COST JUST IN 3 DAYS!

The below is an interesting calculation by a Canada based FM radio on Robot (Endhiran) Box office prediction. I guess, If we put realistic numbers for the Tamil & Telugu 1700 prints as the first week booking is going to be full, then calculation will be,,,, OMG,,,, it will be a never broken record….over Rs. 500 crore in a week?????

Endhiran is the costliest Indian movie ever made. Even the Hindi super stars never made a movie to this cost.

It is heard that the total cost can be between Rs. 160 crore to Rs. 200 crore Indian Rupees as the promo expenses are not over yet. Rajinikanth’s salary also depends on the profit, as his final salary number is decided by the profit of the movie (His salary is expected to be around Rs. 45 crore).

The main question is “Would this be a profitable movie or going to be another flop like Baba?” All Rajini fans would see it but would that save it from flop?

Sun pictures have less worry about south, mainly Andhra and Tamilnadu. For north, Sun has ensured no big competition at Robot release time in Hindi. Ranbir’s Anjaana Anjaani will be no direct threat as released on Sept 24th (update: It is postponed to Oct 1st now due to Ayodhya verdict) and Salman’s already super hit Dabanng will be in 4th week on Oct 1. This will help to avoid audience split. Still, one more fear is there. Ayodhya Babar-Masjid verdict is given on Sept 24th. How is the verdict going to be and how people are going to take it will have some effect on cinema goers and promotions on following week?

Here is a quick interesting calculation that must have gone through Kalanithi Maran's mind when he signs all the cheques.

2250 prints are made for theatres all over the world, according to Sun pictures. Some theatres use same print in two halls in a difference of 30 minutes.

There will be 4 shows per day for at least first 3 days (Fri, Sat, Sun). We know that many theatres in Tamilnadu will have 5 or 6 shows per day from early morning.

Average number of seats can be 500. Most of the Indian cinema halls are with over 800 seats while very few halls are with 400 seats.

Ticket price for first week in India varies from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500. Overseas ticket price are fixed but money conversion will bring it to Rs. 400 to Rs. 600.

If we pick all conservative numbers and multiply……..
2250 prints x 4 shows x 500 seats x Rs. 150 = 67,50,00,000 = Rs. 67.5 crore per day.

Rs. 67.5 crore x 3 days = Rs. 202.5 Crore.

By looking at this conservative calculation, Sun will recover the cost in just in 3 days. There is no way Sun pictures would have to worry about the money that has been invested. There can be loss and gain with distributors and Theatre owners depending on the deals. Overall, all the numbers show that Endhiran can make a record breaking collection in the history of Indian cinema. It is only less than two weeks to confirm it.
