Ricky Ponting on quarterfinal loss to India

Devastated to finish on the losing side in what was probably his last World Cup game but defiant nonetheless, Australian captain Ricky Ponting has insisted that the quarterfinal loss toIndia should not be construed as the end of an era in his country's cricket.

Ponting, who was aiming to lead the Aussies to their fourth World Cup title, also predicted that India would beat Pakistan in the semifinal and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men are strong favourites to win the coveted title after a gap of 28 years.

"India played well as a team and deserved victory. We were not good enough (to win). Going forward they will be pretty hard to beat. They will beat Pakistan in the semifinal and go on to win the World Cup now," Ponting said at the post-match press conference after Australia were knocked out of the World Cup by India last night.

"India have a very good batting line up. We played very competitive cricket tonight but I'm disappointed with the two successive losses (against Pakistan in their last league game and today against India)," he said after his side's five-wicket loss in a high-octane World Cup quarterfinal.

But rejected suggestions it was the end of an era in Australian cricket.

"It's a bit premature to say it was the end of an era for Australian cricket, it was a pretty good game tonight. I do not think we were far away from winning the game against a very good Indian team on their home soil. I think it's a bit too early to say it's the end of an era," said Ponting.

He said he would not be playing in the next World Cup but ruled out quitting one-day cricket.

"I am not quitting one-day cricket but this is probably my last World Cup game. I will be happy to look back after retirement that I made a century in my last innings in the World Cup," Ponting said.

Ponting said his side had chances to win the game and they were devastated by the loss.

"We had great expectations from the game. We were a well organized group. We are devastated. We found it difficult to get momentum. Not performing at critical moments cost us the game. We did not grab our opportunities," he said.

"We were 15 to 20 runs short with the bat. 250-260 was a good total but we lost wickets at bad time and never got the momentum going. We did not execute the plans properly," said the 36-year-old Tasmanian who scored a superb 104 after having struggled in the earlier part of the tournament.

The Australian captain felt the schedule of the tournament could have been spread out better but said that cannot be an excuse for his side's crashing out in the quarterfinals.

"The schedule did not help us. But that cannot be put as an excuse for the loss. Over the last ten days my team has played four games. It would have been nice to have them (games) evenly spread out," he said.

He sympathised with his key fast bowler Brett Lee who had made a great effort to get back into the team after a 14-month injury lay-off.

"Brett has given a lot for Australian cricket during his entire career and at times coming back after big injuries. He will be shattered as he has worked very hard to get here," he said.

Movie to be release on BitTorrent

Here are some strange bedfellows: Paramount and BitTorrent. That’s right, the pirate-fighting studio just teamed up with producers who are hell-bent on using the pirates’ favorite peer-to-peer sharing software tool to release The Tunnel on May 19. At the same time, Paramount will release a DVD version of the horror film.

The DVD will contain content that’s supposedly compelling enough to lure those who downloaded the movie into buying the hard copy. The movie won’t be in theaters — it’s another one of those straight-to-video titles. But this is a first: The BitTorrent version, while full-length, serves as a tease. So if you buy the DVD, you’ll get alternate endings, along with extra material that won’t be available on the BitTorrent feed.
Another element of the unconventional monetization scheme is the sale of individual frames from the movie to fans and collectors for $1 apiece. The frames are offered as individual frames, or in groups of 1 second (25 frames), 2 seconds (50 frames) or 1 minute’s worth of the film or more. So far, the film’s producers have sold 30,000 frames, with more than 100,000 still available.
Are the film’s producers giving up the fight against movie piracy by taking a stance of “if you can’t beat 'em, join 'em”? The movie’s producer/editor Enzo Tedeschi told Torrentfreak: “From day one we?ve maintained that The Tunnel is not supporting or condoning piracy, but instead trying to incorporate a legitimate use of peer-to-peer in our distribution strategy internationally.”
The Tunnel's official website offers more insight:
“We believe that if we stop fighting the peer to peer networks, they could become the biggest revolution we have ever seen in the way we share entertainment and information.
After spending years being frustrated by what we saw as the movie industry?s short-sighted and conventional outlook towards the online community, we decided it was time to try something different — The 135K Project was born.
We figured that movie posters and collectable frames from movies are being sold every day, so what if we could raise the money to make ?The Tunnel? by selling every individual frame of it? We would be able to make a movie unencumbered by a studio?s need for box office. We could do what we got into the industry to do in the first place. Tell stories we like and get them out there so people could enjoy them.
What?s the key to doing that? You.
If you like the look of ?The Tunnel? or the idea behind The 135K Project — buy a frame or two, blog about it, follow us on twitter, seed and embed the finished film when it?s released. Whatever you can do. It will all help and show the world there might just be another way. Who knows where that might lead?”
If nothing else, this is certainly a creative distribution plan. I’m just wondering this: Why do the film’s producers and backers think the DVD’s content won’t also be immediately placed on BitTorrent? Perhaps like locks, this scheme is designed to keep the honest people out.
So, commenters, will this work? Is this a new way to distribute films, or a fool’s errand?

Wipro new CEO to get Rs 10 crore salary

T K Kurien, the new chief of the IT business and CEO of Wipro, will get an annual salary package of up to Rs 10 crore.
As per the terms of appointment of Kurien, salary is in the range of minimum of Rs 3 crore to a maximum of Rs 10 crore a year, Wipro said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

This would include periodic increments, variable pay (based on performance criteria), leave travel allowance, house rent allowance, company provided car and driver, furniture and equipment and provident fund among others.

Kurien's is one of the highest salary packages in the IT industry. According to TCS' Annual Report 2009-10, company CEO and Managing Director S Ramadorai received Rs 3.61 crore in salary, benefits and perks and commission for the period between April 1, 2009 and October 5, 2009.

Infosys CEO and MD S Gopalakrishnan received Rs 1.01 crore during the fiscal 2009-10, says the company's annual report.

Kurien will get 12 months salary as severance benefits in case his services are terminated. This benefit will be calculated on the basis on the last drawn salary before the termination.

'If the company terminates the agreement, the company will communicate the same in writing to the CEO and the CEO will be eligible for severance benefits as follows: 12 months last drawn salary,' the filing said.

Salary for this purpose includes basic pay, benefits and allowances and variable pay, it added.

In January this year, Wipro appointed Kurien to lead Wipro's IT business after sacking joint CEOs -- Girish Paranjpe and Suresh Vaswani and dismantling the joint CEO system.

Supermoon on March 19th '-natural disasters

On March 19th 2011, the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years, possibly triggering earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other disasters, claims astrologer Richard Nolle.
The phenomenon, called lunar perigee or Supermoon, happens when the moon reaches its absolute closest point to Earth. On March 19, the natural satellite will be only 221,567 miles away from our planet.

There were Supermoons in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005, and these years had their share of extreme weather conditions, too. Although there are scientific laws that say the moon affects the Earth, it's still ambiguous whether the lunar perigee and natural disasters is coincidence or not.

Two days after online warnings that the Supermoon might trigger disasters, the devastating Japanese tsunami forced everyone to think - could the movement of the moon cause natural calamities?
"Supermoons have a historical association with strong storms, very high tides, extreme tides and also earthquakes," the Daily Mail quoted astrologer Richard Nolle, who first coined the term in 1979, as saying in an interview with ABC radio.
However, scientists dismiss this as utter nonsense.
Dr David Harland, space historian and author, said, "It's possible that the moon may be a kilometre or two closer to Earth than normal at a perigee, but it's an utterly insignificant event."
Professor George Helffrich, a seismologist at the University of Bristol was equally dismissive.
"Complete nonsense. The moon has no significant effect on earthquake triggering. If the moon triggers "big" earthquakes, it would trigger the many of millions of times more "small" earthquakes that happen daily. There is no time dependence of those; hence no moon effect," he said.
According to Dr Roger Musson, of the British Geological Survey (BGS), the devastating earthquake occurred because the Pacific Plate is plunging underneath Japan.
However, while hoping for a non-disastrous ‘moon giant’, point your eyes and camera lenses toward the night sky on 19th. If the sky is clear, you’re gonna get an exceptional celestial treat.

Egypt goes to the first free vote

Forty million Egyptians get their first taste of a free vote in decades when a package of constitutional amendments sponsored by Egypt's ruling military goes to a nationwide vote on Saturday.
The referendum is the first major test of the country's transition to democracy after a popular uprising overthrew President Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian rule.
The amendments drawn up by a panel of military-appointed legal scholars are intended to bring just enough change to the current constitution which the military suspended after coming to power to ensure that upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections are free and fair.
Egypt goes to the first free vote in decades
They would open the elections to independent and opposition candidates and restore full judicial supervision of votes, a measure seen as key to preventing fraud.
They would also limit presidents to two four-year terms, and curtail 30-year-old emergency laws that give police near-unlimited powers.
A "yes" vote would allow parliamentary and presidential elections to be held before the end of the year.
Critics are using social networks and full-page ads in newspapers to argue that the entire constitution must be scrapped and a new one drawn up to guarantee that Egypt is spared future dictators. Egypt has been ruled by men of military backgrounds since 1952 and the current constitution outlines a system that puts overwhelming power in the hands of the president.
The critics also say elections this year will overwhelm the dozens of new political parties born out of the January 25 - February 11 uprising and give unfair advantage to Mubarak's National Democratic Party and the Muslim Brotherhood, the two largest and best organized political forces in the country.
Voters in Saturday's referendum will be asked to cast ballots to say 'yes' or 'no' to the entire package of nine changes, something that critics describe as out of tune with the country's new democratic climate.
Advocates of the amendments say that rejecting them will prolong the rule of the generals who took over from Mubarak when he stepped down February 11 in the face of the 18-day popular uprising.
"We want the new constitution to be born in a democratic environment and drafted by people chosen by elected lawmakers," said Tarek al-Bishry, the head of the committee that drafted the changes.
