1 Enthiran
Enthiran is a Science fiction film co-written and directed by S. Shankar. The film features Rajinikanth in dual roles, as a professor and an android robot. Aishwarya Rai and Danny Denzongpa play other lead roles while Santhanam, Karunas, Kalabhavan Mani, Devadarshini, and Cochin Haneefa play supporting roles.
The film's story revolves around a scientist's struggle to control his creation, an android robot whose programme was upgraded to give it the ability to comprehend and generate human emotions. The plan backfires as the robot falls in love with the scientist's fiancée and is further manipulated to bring destruction to the world when it lands in the hands of a rivaling scientist. How the robot is stopped from further destruction forms the rest of the plot.
After nearly a decade of pre-production work, the film was shot over two years beginning in 2008. Produced by Kalanidhi Maran and Hansraj Saxena, it became India's most expensive film. Upon release, it also made the largest worldwide opening for an Indian film. The film's background score and soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, which released as an album on 31 July 2010.
The film released worldwide on 1 October 2010, along with its dubbed versions: Robot in Hindi and Robo in Telugu. Upon release, it enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success across the globe, collecting an unprecedented 62 crore in the opening weekend, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film and the second highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
2 Angaadi Theru
Angaadi Theru is a Drama film written and directed by Vasanthabalan of Veyil fame, starring debutant Mahesh and Anjali in the lead roles. The film, the title of which referring to the Ranganathan Street in Chennai where the story plays, also features actress Sneha appearing in a cameo role as herself and music jointly composed by Vijay Antony and G. V. Prakash Kumar.
An Ayngaran International production, the film was launched on 11 February 2008 and released on 26 March 2010 to critical acclaim and it was a block buster hit. The movie was the closest competitor for the Indian submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but it lost to Peepli Live.
3 Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa
Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaayaa is a Romantic drama film directed and written by Gautham Menon. It features Silambarasan Rajendar and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. The film, produced by four producers and distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin, features a successful music soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman, cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and editing by Anthony Gonsalves.
The film's story was also simultaneously shot and released by Menon in the Telugu language as Ye Maaya Chesave with a different cast.
Reception
The film took a grand opening, grossing 64,66,062 rupees in its first three days in Chennai. The performances from Silambarasan and Trisha Krishnan have garnered largely positive reviews. The film grossed Rs. 5.75 Crores at the Chennai (in and around Chennai city) box office by its 12th weekend. According to Rediff.com, the film grossed Rs. 30 crores overall
Soundtrack
The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman. After a world premiere at London on 19th December 2009, the audio was relaunched in Chennai on the January 12, 2010. The album consists of 7 tracks overall. A. R. Rahman re-recorded the background music in London. The music and background score were very much appreciated.
4 Mynaa
Mynaa Romantic drama film directed and written by Prabu Solomon. Jointly distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin and Kalpathi S. Aghoram, stars Vidharth and Amala Paul in the lead roles. Featuring an acclaimed soundtrack by D. Imman, the film, which garnered much anticipation prior to release, released on 5 November 2010, coinciding with the Diwali festival, receiving critical acclaim.
5 Boss Engira Bhaskaran
Boss Engira Bhaskaran is a Romantic comedy film written and directed by M. Rajesh who earlier directed Siva Manasula Sakthi (2009). Starring Arya, Nayantara and Santhanam in lead roles, the film is produced by K. S. Sreenivasan and features music scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography handled by Sakthi Saravanan.
The film revolves around a young happy-go-lucky unemployed man, Bhaskaran, who "lives" for other people, always going on errands, while neglecting his own life and career, until he meets a young girl, who brings about a change in his life. The film released on 10 September 2010 to highly positive reviews and also became commercially very successful.
6 Singam
Singam is a Action film directed by Hari, starring Surya Sivakumar and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles. The film was produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja in association with Reliance Big Pictures, and distributed by Sun Pictures, released on 28 May 2010. Upon release, the film was dubbed into Telugu and released as Yamudu.
The film was successful and grossed 90 crore at the box office worldwide.
7 Madrasapattinam
Madrasapattinam is a Historical drama film, written and directed by A. L. Vijay. The film stars Arya and Amy Jackson in the lead roles, while Nassar and Cochin Hanifa play other prominent roles.The film released on July 9, 2010 with positive reviews.
The film opened and stayed at No.1 in Chennai box office charts for 3 weeks.
8 Kalavani
Kalavani is a Romantic comedy film written and directed by newcomer A. Sargunam. It stars Vimal of Pasanga fame in the lead role along with debutante Oviya, Saranya Ponvannan, Ganja Karuppu and Ilavarasu, who enact pivotal roles. The film, made on a shoe-string budget, released on 25 June 2010 to very positive reviews and becoming a surprise sleeper hit. Following the film's success, director Gautham Menon's Photon Kathaas has acquired the film's rights to remake it other languages.
