Railway Budget 2011-12 highlights

Here are the highlights of the Railway Budget 2011-12, presented by Railways Minister Mamata bannerjee in Parliament today.

•    New trains: 9 Duronto trains; 15 suburban trains in Kolkata; 3 Shatabdi trains; 56 express trains

•    Railways to do away with all unmanned crossings in Fiscal Year 2012

•    E-booking of tickets to become cheaper; AC Rs. 10; Non-AC: Rs. 5

•    Railways to install anti-collision devices in eight railway zones

•    Rail Yatri Sewa - Assistance for senior citizens at major stations

•    Multi-purpose Go India smart card started as a pilot project

•    16,000 ex-servicemen to be given Railway jobs

•    Work on Western freight corridor to start soon

•    Metro coach factory to be set up near Singur

•    Attempt to combine social and economic concerns

•    All India security helpline started

•    Year 2011-12 - Green Year

•    Imphal connected to railway network

•    Appeal to everybody to stop Rail Roko agitations

•    Railways going through a financially difficult phase:  Mamata

•    Earnings to exceed Rs. 1 lakh crore

•    Railways to raise Rs. 10,000 crore via bonds

•    34 new Metro services for Kolkata

•    2 additional services on Delhi-Ghaziabad sections

•    New suburban services in Mumbai, Hyderabad-Secunderabad

•    Mumbai EMU services  augmented to 12 bogies from 9 bogies

•    Increasing frequency of Duronto trains

•    New train to mark birth centenary of Swami Vikenanda - Vivek Express

•    Kavi Guru Express to mark Rabindranath Tagore's birth centenary

•    10,000 shelters for homeless who live near rail tracks
No hike in passenger fare and freight rates. 
Nine additional services for Chennai suburban service.  
New Duronto trains to be introduced on Allahabad-Mumbai, Pune-Ahmedabad, Sealdah-Puri, Madurai-Chennai,
 Chennai- Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai Central-New Delhi routes. 
Double-decker air-conditioned trains to run Jaipur-Delhi and Ahmedabad-Mumbai routes.  
Railways to intoduce 56 new trains in financial year 2012.  
3 new Shatabdis to be intoduced.  
New Durontos announced. 
Journalists to get 50% concession in tickets twice per year. 
Railway earnings set to exceed the Rs one lakh crore mark.
Suburban rail network of Hyderabad to be strengthened. 
Kolkata Metro to expand network to suburbs with 32 new services. 
Frequency of 17 trains to be increased. 
Sixth Pay Commission added Rs 73,000 cr to railway expenses in last financial year.
'Go India' smart card ticket project to be launched this year.
Booking charges will be cheaper with a charge of only Rs 10 for AC classes and Rs 5 for others. 
New AC class to be introduced. 
Railways to induct 16,000 ex-servicemen.  
12,000 acres dedicated to freight corridor. 
2011 will be year of Green Railways.  
Railways to spend over Rs 9,000 crores on new lines. 
Rail accident rate declines from 0.29 per cent last year to 0.17 per cent now. 
Anti-collision devices to be commissioned in three railway zones including South and South Central soon. 
States showing good performance in rail movement to be provided with two new trains and two new projects, says Banerjee.
Railways to set up 442 new stations by March 2012.  
Budget for railways pegged at Rs 57,630 cr.

Manipur to be connected to rail network.  
Diesel locomotive proposed in Manipur.  
Bridge factory to be set up in J&K. 
Metro coach factories in Singur and Kolkata. 
New coach factory will be set at Palakkad in Kerala. 
First coach from new coach factory in Rae Bareli to be produced within three months. 
Good work for railways should be appreciated, says Mamata.
We are aiming for a sustainable railways with focus on social responsibility.
